Book Donation Policy

As you might imagine, a library of 7,000 books in a modest home is a bit of a crunch.

We do, however, accept some offers that meet our needs/interests. The best

approach would be to send a sample list to sittingroomlibrary@gmail.com, no more

than 10 at a time. We’ll check our holdings and see what would be useful. Otherwise,

as I’m sure you know, the best place to donate books is to your nearest public library.

General Guidelines for Donations

Donors are required to inform the Sitting Room Library in advance of a

potential donation via email to sittingroomlibrary@gmail.com. Lists of

proposed books, which may be checked against the library’s holdings, are

preferable.

We cannot accept:

  • Books with broken bindings, missing pages, with mold, smoke, or water damage, or excessive writing in the text.
  • Magazines (bound or unbound).
  • Children’s books

We either retain or pass along donated materials as collection demands dictate.

Those not retained for the Sitting Room Library collections are offered to the

public library or to our community of readers. Donated “collections” are integrated into the library’s general collections.

The legal and tax appraisals of donations are the responsibility of the donor.

The Internal Revenue Service considers the Sitting Room Library an interested

party, so we cannot perform such appraisals.
